    Keynotes and Workshop Descriptions

     

    Early Bird Program - How to Navigate PowerPoint by Linda Gossar-Loesch, ADC. Join us and discover how easy it is to create PowerPoint presentations for use as instruction in programs and for your resident's enjoyment. Use photos from activity programs and put them into a slideshow presentation to use as an activity. Gain hands-on computer and digital photography experience along with learning how to create your own CD.

    Pet Therapy by Sherry Barzak, ADC & Maria Beiter, ADC. What is everyone doing for pets? What exactly is culture change wanting us do? Learn the rules and regulations for having Pet Therapy. What are the benefits to your residents? View the wonderful results as you look at resident reactions to the programs.

    What Do Generations Have to do With It? by Kay Lynne Ege, BS, ACC, CMC. This Keynote presentation delves into unusual phenomena that exist in our present workforce. The first time in history, four generations are working together...or are they? This dynamic is creating some very interesting management situations and brings up the issue of "How do we manage?" You will gain a better understanding of each generation's thoughts and actions.

    Dementia - Guide to Meeting Needs of Many by Debbie Hommell, ACC,MC,EDU, CTRS. This session will address the challenges in programming for residents with dementia. Understanding the various stages of dementia, adapting to the cognitive abilities for each stage, and meeting the needs of a mixed group of residents will be discussed. The program will follow a "Survivor" format; Outwit, Outplay and Outlast.

    A. NCCAP Certification by Cindy Bradshaw, ACC, NCCAP Executive Director. This session will discuss the options for becoming certified with National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP). Many have been eligible for national certification and simply did not know it. Participants will discover an individual plan for becoming certified. Certified participants will gain an understanding of the renewal process. You can visit NCCAP.org to download an application to bring with you to this session to determine which level of certification best suits your experience and education.

    B. Science for Seniors by Gloria Hoffner, BA, ADC. Science for Seniors is a hands-on activity for residents of all abilities at retirement communities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and adult daycare centers. Learn how to structure a one hour science program including: choosing a topic, finding trivia, selecting a video, and conducting a safe experiment with residents. Experiments include: table top volcano, how ocean waves work, how flowers draw nourishment, and how polar bears live in frigid waters.

    C. Estate Planning 101 by Albert J. Zangrilli, Jr., Esq. This presentation covers the traditional "building blocks" of the "estate plan" for a typical person and couple. A discussion of the traditional documents that are involved with such an estate plan: power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney, living will, last will and testament, and trust. We will also cover how to deal with related issues such as joint ownership of property, its effect on an estate plan, guardianships, their avoidance, and alert the audience to the growing need for "Medicaid planning."

    D. The Gift of Legacy by Paula Church, BA, RN Everyone has a story to tell! Capturing a person's life story, celebrating their unique path and purpose, and sharing their wisdom are valuable experiences. Attendees will be introduced to the process and final product of a "Gift of Legacy". The project is an effort to fully understand the value of creative program innovation in all settings.

    E. 1:1 Programs: The More I Know You by Sandra Farmer, ADC. Discover your resident's background to gain access to a quality 1:1 program with each resident while also building a lasting relationship. You will also learn how to organize materials for sight, sound, touch, and taste. Handouts will be provided with tabletalk and scenarios given on obtaining community and family involvement.

    F. CD Creations by Linda Gossar-Loesch, BS, ADC, & Ursula McKenzie J.D., MPH, Activity Assistant. Recycle your old CDs by using them for craft projects. Come and see the creative things that can be made from recycled CDs. Your residents will enjoy creating these unique projects. This is an inexpensive way to make your program turn "green" by reusing materials. You will create a sample to take home along with unique ideas and patterns.

    G. ExerGaming - Making Exercise Fun by Carolyn Jackson, BS Music Education. Discover the physical, psychological, social, and economic benefits of exercise. There will be a presentation of fifteen games and activities. Each activity will be presented via game. The program will include specific benefits provided from the activity and ways to adapt for those with limited abilities.

    H. Are You Stressed Because of Stress? by Loretta Juliano, ADC & Terry Hull, ADC. Let's examine some additional ways to help us "lay it down", walk away, and eliminate the side effects of stress that haunt us. We will also look at ways to help trim the stress monster.

    I. Pennsylvania Railroad Museums as Travel Destinations by Richard Andrews, Author and Railroad Enthusiast. Looking for a different place to take your residents? How about to a Railroad Museum or operating railroad in Pennsylvania? This presentation will include information and photos of various railroad sites around Pennsylvania.

    New Products and Resources for Programming by Tom Hudson, ADC. This session will introduce you to the newest items and equipment being offered on the market today for Activity Professionals. How many times in the past have you purchased equipment only to be disappointed? During this session you will have the opportunity to meet vendors and try out their products. Tables will be set up with the newest items available for everyone to use.

    Keynote - Transitioning to Long Term Care by Katie Magoulick, MSW, LSW. This presentation will focus on the resident's transition from home or hospital to a Long Term Care or Assisted Living facility. The topics include loss and adjustment to a new lifestyle, and how residents and families can use coping strategies to ease their transition. The ability for the staff to better understand this change, along with aiding the resident and families will also be presented. Strategies to welcome and support the resident and families while moving to a higher level of care will be addressed.

    Musical Expressions 101 by Carol Gockley, ADPC. This is an interactive class with basic musical ideas that can be used by the non-musical and the musically talented Activity Professional. Themed sing-alongs, rhythm instruments, one-to-one, small and large group ideas, moving to music, and big band to classical listening skills will be covered.

    J. The Ultimate Spa Day by Lori Killmeyer, ADPC, Cosmetology Teacher. What are the benefits to having a Spa Day? Obtain education on nails and learn what tools and supplies you will need to pamper your residents. Learn how to set up your manicure and facial table. What other activities can you incorporate into your Spa Day?

    K. Estate Planning 101 - see description C

    L. Memory Stars by Cass Jendzurski, Certified Music Practitioner. Learn how to create a three dimensional paper Moravian Star. Stars can be personalized and given to the family members of a resident who has died as a token of your care and compassion. These stars can be displayed throughout the year. They also look lovely on a Christmas tree! Note to attendees: please bring your own scissors!

    N. Surfing the Net by Ursula McKenzie, J.D., MPH, Activity Assistant. There are twelve great hours a day to engage, inspire, and connect with older adults. That can mean thousands of hours of fun and learning, but eventually Activities Professionals have to ask, "What's next?" Enter the World Wide Web to gain access to unlimited lessons and activities from all over the globe.

    O. Culture Change for Activity Professionals: Person-Centered Activity Programming by Kay Lynne Ege, BS, ACC, CMC. This session will explore the culture change movement that is occurring across all venues for Activity Professionals. Gain a better understanding of how the culture change movement impacts Activity Professionals. Be able to identify person- centered principles that can be used in planning activity programs. Learn practical strategies that will help you transform to a new model.

    P. Stretch and Relaxation by Gregory Brink, ADC, BS Education, Personal Trainer. This course will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing positions. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques will promote a sense of well being and mental clarity.

    Q. Fun and Activities Roundtable by Sister Denise Bernas, Felician Sister, ACC, BA. This brainstorming session will be a fun learning experience that will include titles, purposes, ideas, and demonstrations for activities. The session will also help you acquire information that has been improved as well as new ideas! So join in the fun of sharing and getting ideas for your activity programs and events.

    R. Lions, Tigers & Bears, Oh My! by Loretta Juliano, ADC. During this session you will learn how you can better live and work with one another and understand why we are the way we are. Learn valuable skills that can help you to better function and coexist in the workplace and in all relationships.

    "PAPA'S Got Talent" Show Angelo Phillips, ADC Come join us as we showcase some of the most talented people around... Activity Professionals! Whether you sing, dance, play an instrument, juggle, act, whatever your talent, this is your chance to put it out for the world to see. Those of you who attended last year's conference know what a great evening our first talent show was, so pass the word to your fellow directors and come prepared to show us what you got!

    Closing Keynote -- Communication is the Key to Success by Cindy Bradshaw, BS, ACC. For years my mother would say, "Cindy, it is not what you say it's HOW you say it". Being a mother myself, I now understand that statement more so than ever. The circumstance is the same with our professional peers. With technology in fast-forward, it is possible to actually conduct detailed "conversations" without ever speaking to another human face-to-face. Participants in this session will conduct communication exercises to demonstrate the fact that what we say, and how we say it, are both valuable to professional relationships.

    Panel Discussion with the Speakers Guest Speakers & PAPA Board A group of our top speakers will answer your questions with their combined expertise. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear what they think. Stop by the registration desk to fill out questions that will be submitted in advance for each speaker.

    Creative Arts Awards Session and Annual Meeting Angelo Phillips, ADC Come join us as we recognize some of the most creative people around... our residents! The award session will feature a slideshow presentation of some of the entries to our Creative Arts Festival and highlight the winners of the various categories. Awards will be presented for first, second, and third place in each category. This presentation will be followed by our annual PAPA Board meeting.
